Chart of Miao Groups: This chart depicts graphically the major dialects and subdialects of the Miao. The languages of each major group -- Qiandong Miao (Eastern Miao), Xiangxi Miao (Northern Miao), Western Hmongic, and Farwestern Hmongic -- are unintelligible with each other. Also, understanding between the the various subdialects in the groups is often low or unintelligible. This is especially true among the Western and Farwestern groups which have the greatest diversity.
